africaJUICE’s environmental strategy incorporates the following elements:
- africaJUICE has set targets to have zero waste operations and aims for low carbon footprints by implementing in our projects:
- comprehensive waste management plans, all our biomass waste will be composted and used as field preparation fertilizer;
- comprehensive renewable energy plans including bio-fuel from seed oil and solar power as an off-grid solution;
- employing appropriate technology to minimise pressure on key local resources such as water. For example, at the Tibila farm we will utilise drip irrigation in place of the current practice of furrow irrigation thereby delivering a small net reduction in water use compared to current operations but with significantly higher productivity per hectare.
- supporting biodiversity by developing a biodiversity action plan for the plantations. We will actively create and manage habitats and biotopes on farms, to ensure the maximum feasible population, on a commercial plantation, of species of birds and insects.
- facilitating co-location of processing activities to allow better use of waste heat and energy products and combined utilities and infrastructure.
